How to Build a Resilient Mindset When Setbacks Hit Hard

Sometimes life hits hard.

Whether it's a personal setback, a professional challenge, or just feeling stuck, we all face moments that test our mindset. What makes the difference is how we choose to respond.

This week on social media, I’ve been sharing a framework I use to stay intentional when setbacks hit—the RISE Framework. Since some of you may have missed it, I wanted to take this opportunity to share how it works and why it’s been a game-changer for me.

The RISE Framework is all about choosing to move forward with purpose rather than reacting impulsively. It’s a simple, practical way to turn obstacles into opportunities.

Here’s how it works:

  • Recognize: Acknowledge the challenge without judgment.

  • Investigate: Dig into why it’s affecting you.

  • Shift: Reframe the situation as a growth opportunity.

  • Execute: Take one small, intentional action to move forward.

I’ll be honest—embracing this approach didn’t come naturally to me.

I’ve faced plenty of moments when I just wanted to throw in the towel. One of the most pivotal was when I was asked to be taken off an account by a client many years ago. It was a hard pill to swallow, and at the time, I took it personally.

But that experience ultimately forced me to rethink how I was showing up as a partner and leader.

It wasn’t just about losing the account—it was about recognizing that I wasn’t delivering value in a meaningful way. That’s when I realized that I had been stuck in a mindset focused on what I wanted, rather than what the client needed. Shifting my perspective to become a trusted advisor rather than just a vendor changed everything for me moving forward.

Every day, we have a choice.

We can let setbacks define us or use them to rise above. When you choose to RISE, you build a mindset that doesn’t just endure challenges—it grows because of them.

To help you put this into action, I’ve created a simple one-page guide called the RISE Framework & Journaling Guide. This guide not only breaks down the RISE steps but also includes powerful journaling prompts to help you reflect, process challenges, and move forward with intention. Print it out, keep it on your desk, and use it whenever you need a quick reminder to choose resilience. Get the guide here: Download now .

Let me know how if you use the RISE Framework in your life.

Thanks for reading - I appreciate you more than you know!
